Academic integrity is the main thing for the institutions in the world. Institute never give relaxation for those who violates its laws. Institutes don’t allow any student to cheat in their paper or thesis. Plagiarism is increased not among students only but also many teachers are accused of that particularly if talking about Pakistan.
Plagiarism cases increase day by day because of many reason like growing access to the internet for example if a teacher has to write its research paper for PhD or masters, he has many material available on the internet for such topic and also have many scholarly articles available for them to review by HEC National Digital Library. According to HEC “45 faculty member from a dozen universities over plagiarism charge”. Similarly goes for students for example if he has given a research assignment then he complete his assignments by just copy paste the material available on the internet without attributionof author as Gabriel said “atRhodeIslandCollege, a freshman copied and paste from website and did not think he credit a source”.
Apart from easy access to internet there are many other reason behind plagiarism particularly in Pakistan. In Pakistan majority of people do their research work just for upgrading their grades or to have more financial stability. For example there many cases in Pakistan in which dean faculty member are accused of plagiarism. Principal of law college, wife of vice-chancellor of university of Punjab also accused of plagiarism and interestingly she was a member of university’s standing committee on plagiarism (Dr Munawar Anees et al).As far as a students concerned for plagiarism in Pakistan many students don’t even know about plagiarism and how to avoid plagiarism. They are not educate enough to cope up with this issue as this should be taught in schools and colleges as they have academic writing question compulsory in paper but they have built in them to cheat from books or other sources as Kausar Bilal stated“even at college level students didn’t have any programs to help them learn the art of composition”. In schools and college students just learn by heart some topic of essay and then spit it out on paper as it is.
Another problem that students face is yearly program in which selected questions are asked in paper. The most damaging thing for our students is “five year” the question pattern of examination never changes that compel students to just focus to learn some topic and leave the another one. This is not just valid for matriculation or intermediate students but also those who are undergraduates does the same even the competitive examination CSS found to be copied from entry test paper from International Islamic University Islamabad (Juanidi). According to one of the member of Quaid-e-Azam university said “this is also a plagiarism and paper setters are not allowed to copy question from anywhere”.
Another aspect of plagiarism is that student and some teachers doesn’t feel bad or immoral to quote someone else writing to his own. It is very sad situation in all over the world. People think that taking material from net and use it in his assignment is perfectly okay but it rooted from the childhood. That is the time to teach a child not to copy, we don’t teach our children correct ways as child don’t differentiate between others thing and he think it belongs to him (Stanley) but it’s the duty of parents to teach him that difference so that the concept of stealing become clear for them because plagiarism is taking other words and quote it as your own means it’s a type of stealing.
Plagiarism is not only stealing the words but also it decreases the moral values, creativity and thinking ability of students. For example, if student doesn’t know how to think regarding any topic? How to streamline all his thoughts and how to support his idea with other sources and how he can give credit to other authors then how we aspect from him to think something new? He will neither be able to come up with new ideas nor will he try to think. It is the generation of students who goes to cybercafé and believe information on the net is just for anyone to take (Teresa fishman).
Therefore it is necessary to arrange some courses first to improve the academic writing of students for essays, research paper and for the thesis. These courses should combine with plagiarism concept that what is plagiarism, how one can avoid it and what is the importance of citation and attribution. We should educate our student about punishment of plagiarism as it has zero tolerance for the plagiarist.
